After the Toronto Hearings: Taking Giant Steps Toward Justice

چکیده
Nearly two weeks after the close of the Toronto Hearings on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, a small group gathered for a lunch meeting at Al Madina Egyptian restaurant across the street from the University of Waterloo, in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. It is the favorite meeting place of our 9/11 activist host, Egyptian-born Dr. Mohamed Elmasry , as well as a favorite among students and employees at local high-technology companies, which include nearby Blackberry-maker Research In Motion, whose co-CEO Mike Lazaridis once worked as Elmasry’s research assistant. Dr. Elmasry is a Professor Emeritus of Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo, and founder of the Canadian Islamic Congress. He is also a member of the editorial board for online magazine The Canadian Charger , along with Michael Keefer, who was a moderator of the Toronto Hearings held on September 8-11, at which Dr. Elmasry was present in the audience. No stranger to issues of social justice, Elmasry’s recently published book “A New Egypt” includes a DVD of his eyewitness account of the January 25 revolution from Tahrir Square in Cairo.

Almost 40 years ago, the Supreme Court, in the landmark case Goldberg v. BACKGROUND There is some evidence that when mental health commitment hearings are held in accordance with therapeutic jurisprudence principles they are perceived as less coercive, and more just in their procedures leading to improved treatment adherence and fewer hospital readmissions. This suggests an effect of the hearing on therapeutic relationships. We compared working alliance and interper...
متن کاملMoral Reasoning in Interactional Context: Strategic Uses of Care and Justice Arguments in Mediation Hearings*
Previous studies of moral reasoning have treated moral reasoning as a product of the individual. This article extends the study of moral reasoning by analyzing its use in strategic interaction. I analyze how participants in a naturally occurring situation of conflict use moral arguments strategically and negotiate over the types of arguments that are acceptable. Gilligan’s Care and Justice mode...
متن کاملBaby-Step Giant-Step Algorithms for Non-uniform Distributions
The baby-step giant-step algorithm, due to Shanks, may be used to solve the discrete logarithm problem in arbitrary groups. The paper explores a generalisation of this algorithm, where extra baby steps may be computed after carrying out giant steps (thus increasing the giant step size). The paper explores the problem of deciding how many, and when, extra baby steps should be computed so that th...
